Stephanie Revesz Thornton

Ocean Energy Leader

About Me

From the Deck to the Boardroom: A Lifelong Mission for the Ocean

My relationship with the ocean began at six years old when my family moved onto a commercial fishing boat. Those formative years weren’t spent in a traditional neighborhood, but emersed in the sea. That foundation sparked a lifelong mission: to understand the ocean scientifically and protect it through sustainable innovation.

I eventually left the deck to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Marine Science, followed by a Master of Business Administration (MBA). This unique blend of scientific rigor and business strategy has defined my 45-year career—allowing me to speak to both the ecosystem and the economy.

A Legacy of Stewardship

Before leading in the private sector, I served at the highest levels of ocean governance as Chief of the U.S. Marine Sanctuaries Division within the Department of Commerce in Washington, D.C., stewarding the careful balance between environmental preservation and responsible human use.

Today, as General Manager of Azura Ocean Technology, I channel that lifetime of experience into helping advance the global energy transition – driving climate-resilient growth through the development of ocean energy technologies that deliver renewable power and fresh water to Blue Economy businesses and communities.

I bring a rare blend of public and private expertise, startup agility, along with more than 17 years of international ocean energy leadership in the Blue Economy. I strive to build global cross-sectoral partnerships needed to scale sustainable ocean energy solutions worldwide.

My goal remains what it has been since I was a child on that boat: to ensure the ocean remains a source of life, water and energy for generations to come.
